Position Overview

The Community Relations Coordinator will provide support to a Communications team with various public relations and communication projects and tasks.  This position will work collaboratively with the leadership of the Communications team, health plan leadership, consultants, vendors and relevant business owners to promote various company activities, corporate events and conferences across the health plans to enhance the company’s image and brand.  The Community Relations Coordinator will implement the social strategy, coordinating with department management to ensure its effectiveness and encouraging adoption of relevant social media techniques in the culture. The incumbent is responsible for growing membership through educating and servicing the uninsured Medicaid and Medicaid Expansion population; including meeting the community’s need for ongoing educational and social service outreach to existing and potential members.

Job Description

  • Acts as liaison for MetroPlus and the community and assists with establishing and maintaining positive relationships with community organizations, community advocacy groups that impact target populations, provider offices, faith-based organizations and perform other activities to enhance MetroPlus presence in the community
  • Attends meetings with community boards in assigned territory and represents MetroPlus at community organizations and events such as promotions, enrollment events (where appropriate and compliant with local market regulations) and health fairs
  • Develops, maintains and nurtures relationship with City agencies through routine meeting attendance, workshops, meetings, etc. and maintains  knowledge of government regulations and emerging web technology to ensure regulatory compliance with all state, federal and MetroPlus specific requirements
  • Maintains active membership and participation in civic organizations
  • Attends networking meetings to deliver healthcare messages
  • Assists the MetroPlus Marketing Department in planning and conducting speaking engagements and other formal presentations with the general public, media, community groups, employers and employees.  Researches on the subject matter to support the key message development and coordinates the development of audio and visual materials, if required.  Ensures communications are tailored to the audience
  • Conducts presentations, staff exhibits and perform other activities in an effort to maintain and establish positive relationships with providers, community and faith based organizations
  • Conducts marketing presentations to increase effectiveness in establishing rapport, assessing individual needs and communicating product/benefit features and differences
  • Supports and educates grassroots organization and members through workshops, health education activities and seminars
  • Maintains working relationship with local and specialty media contacts germane to the health care industry, national business and other key outlets
  • Strategizes and develops plan with contracted media firm in pitching, booking and coordinating interviews for MetroPlus spokesperson(s), executives and Subject Matter Experts
  • Supports MetroPlus’ social media platform, internal framework, process and outreach by providing daily management of all social properties including, but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts based on company objectives and support for marketing messaging as well as other critical areas
  • Tracks all outreach activities, as well as maintains results in the Customer Relations Management database
  • Acts as service representative and for assigned and special projects and acts as a resource to the membership and the community, as needed
  • Manages an assigned territory or specific business initiatives such as Community Relations, Uninsured Outreach Program, Retention or Provider Marketing
  • Assists with the development of new as well as evaluation of current strategic initiatives
  • Implements strategic initiatives that will drive member growth, retention and/or address the health plan priorities
  • Provides telephonic assistance, outreach and/or guidance to members and potential members regarding the benefit and enrollment questions, and/or providing assistance on any social service needs
  • Assists potential and existing members with the enrollment or recertification process, and  retention activities to ensure resolution to members,  where appropriate and compliant with local market regulations
  • Researches companies and organizations, identifies and collects educational material on community networks and advocacy groups with similar missions and values and communicates the information to management, for possible partnerships
  • Creates reports based on statistical data to maximize enrollment opportunities, identifies and collects educational material on community networks and advocacy groups with similar missions and values, and communicates the information to management
  • Sustains routine communication through correspondence (e-mail, written memos, telephone, personal contact, etc.)
  • Creates communications strategy for prioritized health plan markets and business development markets
  • Ownership for leveraging and highlighting Public Relations opportunities for MetroPlus – create corporate and health plan media advisories and press releases for each event
  • Seeks opportunities to promote MetroPlus in our current and business development markets
  • Helps manage MetroPlus Public Image in collaboration with other department leaders and the external media relations company
  • Provides insights and collaborates with writers, web designers, graphic artists, developers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop written material, collaterals, press releases, talking points, scripts, web content copy and other relevant materials to promote and inform the public and press of MetroPlus campaigns and events
  • Partners with MetroPlus Communications Department to identify media opportunities to strengthen brand recognition
  • Identifies cultural issues regarding current and potential members and communicates those issues to management
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a college degree
  • Must have 3 years relevant experience in healthcare or sales/marketing environment
  • Must have a minimum 5 years of community relations experience
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and proficient in Associated Press style writing standards
  • Demonstrate effective verbal, written and broad communications experience with depth in media relations, issued management and crisis communication
  • Confident with public speaking
  • Knowledge about provider network that supports the delivery area; knowledge of Plan and/or competitor’s Value-Added Benefits
  • Demonstrate sound decision-making problem solving, good judgement, research and presentation skills
  • Ability to understand when to escalate erroneous/inconsistent information discovered in resources to appropriate level of management for review
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to meet deadline
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented
  • Must be outgoing and must demonstrate enthusiasm for motivating people

  • Computer proficiency- must possess knowledge in Microsoft Office (word, Excel, PowerPoint), use of internet
  • Knowledge in operating general office equipment such as telephone, computer, related media and information devices, fax and copy machine
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a motor vehicle with a valid moto vehicle insurance. Must be able to travel as needed and adhere to MetroPlus travel policies.
