Position Overview
The Quality Improvement Specialist intern will help drive initiatives that improve clinical quality and ensure members are connected to timely and appropriate care. This work centers on HEDIS, the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, which is a national standard for measuring how well health plans deliver preventive care, chronic condition management, and other essential services.
During the internship, the student will contribute to the design and evaluation of a performance improvement intervention tied to a priority HEDIS measure or process, gaining hands‑on experience with healthcare quality methods, data interpretation, and operational execution.
This role offers meaningful exposure to how quality programs drive member outcomes, influence health plan performance, and support a career in healthcare quality, population health, or analytics.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Support the design and implementation of a performance improvement intervention tied to a priority HEDIS measure or process.
- Assist with collecting, organizing, and reviewing data to identify care gaps, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
- Participate in monitoring and reporting activities that track intervention progress and member outcomes.
- Contribute to process mapping, documentation updates, and workflow enhancements that improve operational efficiency.
- Help prepare materials, job aids, or communication tools that support member outreach or provider engagement.
- Collaborate with Quality Management, HEDIS Operations, and analytics partners to support cross-functional project needs.
- Participate in meetings, working sessions, and routine operational activities to learn how quality functions within a health plan.
- Perform general project support tasks, including scheduling, note taking, and preparing status updates.
Work Shifts
9:00 AM- 5:00 PM
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Public Health, Health Administration, Health Informatics or similar program.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other standard productivity tools, with willingness to learn new systems or databases (pivot tables, lookups, basic formulas).
- Basic understanding of SQL, R, or Python, or a similar analytic language (preferred but not required).
- Familiarity with reporting or dashboard tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar).
- Basic analytical skills with the ability to interpret data trends and summarize findings.
- Exposure to process improvement concepts (Lean, workflow mapping, or similar) .
- Basic understanding of project management fundamentals (task tracking, documentation, timelines).
- Strong organizational skills to support report inventory creation and audit preparation.
- Interest in healthcare quality, performance improvement, and regulatory programs such as HEDIS.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for training material development and workflow documentation.
